Regional Nordic Conditions - Winter 2015/16

Starting a thread where skiers and and groomers can 'Reply' to note current conditions at the regional Nordic facilities (Leavenworth, Echo Ridge, Stevens Pass, Lake Wenatchee). To start things off we just received this grooming report:

Echo Ridge, December 11, 2015.Report by: Wayne Machus, Time: 6:00 am, Temperature: 28 degrees, Base Snow: 8", New Snow: 2" new.
The cold temperatures have returned to the Ridge. The bad news on the grooming tonight was I didn't get to the Outback or the southern half of the Outer Rim which has a tree down across the trail. The good news is I got everything else! 6-foot wide on a few and 8 to 10-feet wide on most trails.

Leavenworth Winter Sports Trails. December 11, 2015., Time 7:00 a.m., Temp 33 degrees. The Icicle River Trail is OPEN for Nordic Classic and Skate Skiing. The conditions have started to dry out so we are back to daily grooming at the Icicle River Trail. The Leavenworth Ski Hill Nordic trail is OPEN and was groomed for Skate and Classic on Thursday afternoon. Tubing and Alpine skiing re-open Saturday and Sunday.

Stevens Pass Nordic. December 11, 2015. Not yet opened for the season.

The Methow Valley is OPEN with 100% of the trails groomed now. The ski trails opened for the season before Thanksgiving this season.

December 15, 2015. Echo Ridge. Conditions at 8:00 am: temperature: 28 degrees, Base Snow is 8", no new snow. All trails out of the lower lot, No Where To Hide and Upsy Daisy were groomed last night with classic tracks.
The following trails were groomed with 8-10' corduroy, no tracks: Zoom, Big Critter Inner and Outer Rim, Windsinger and Ridgeview.

December 15, 2015. Lake Wenatchee State Park.
7” of new snow as of Monday. Variable snow with base depth up to12” in the open. Grooming Report: Too little snow for machine grooming due to thin areas under tree canopy. Trail packing underway. Sled hill is groomed. We hope to provide some groomed skiing opportunities next weekend. Permits will be required to ski the Lake Wenatchee trails as of Wednesday, 12/16). You'll need a Season Sno-Park pass with Groomed Trails sticker to use any of the parking areas ($80) or you need a Daily Sno-Park pass ($20). Also required is an Annual or Daily Discover Pass for use of the State Park. There are self-pay stations at each parking area within the park for daily Sno-Park and daily Discover Passes.** Sno Park permits are available online: Buy a SnoPark Permit Local vendors include Derr Sportsman, Kahler Glen Golf and Ski Resort, Midway Grocery, and Plain Hardware. See the Nordic-Skiing guidebooks for detailed information about the Lake Wenatchee Trails or Nason Ridge Trails.

More news about permits needed to ski the Nason Ridge trails at Lake Wenatchee, which are on Weyerhauser land, and will require yet another permit. this info was issued by Lake Wenatchee State Park:
Weyerhaeuser owns most of the land we groom for the Nason Ridge trails. New this year is a fee-based permit system for public access to all their lands. The permit system runs from July 1 through December 31 this year. No one may enter these lands during this period unless they have purchased a permit from Weyerhaeuser. We realize this will have a large impact on our early ski season, not to mention the first few days of the huge Christmas holiday week. Weyerhaeuser would not make exceptions to their permit this year, but offered us assurance that next year we may be able to adjust the dates by a couple weeks to accommodate our ski season. January 1 - March 31 our state Sno Park program was able to purchase a lease to allow grooming activities and non-motorized recreational access to the trails on Weyerhaeuser land. Thank you for purchasing those Sno Park Permits! The program works hard to help maintain public recreational opportunities! See Weyerhaeuser's web page for more information (https://www.wyrecreationnw.com/PropertySearch.aspx )

12/28/2015 Nordic Skiing on local roads. Nordic skiers should keep in mind that the road skiing around the region is excellent right now (you don't necessarily need to pay for groomed skiing to have a good Nordic outing). We just received this message from Mark Shipman as a reminder of this:

I took my sons up to Leavenworth to do some Nordic skiing, and when we discovered it was $18/person just for a day pass, we skied up the Icicle River Road instead. The road was in excellent shape for skiing, BTW.

There are a number of good roads to ski up toward Blewett Pass as well. The Five Mile Road, roads around Tronsen Meadows, and the Wenatchee Crest Roads are all good options. See the WenatcheeOutdoors Nordic-Ski Guidebook for details about these option.
