Hiking up the Northrup Canyon Wagon Road

Hello, first time posting here. Last Wednesday I hiked up the Northrup Canyon Wagon Road near Steamboat Springs. Mine was the only vehicle at the trailhead. I headed up the steep, rocky grade through numerous rock slides and up into a breath taking view of the Canyon and also Steamboat Rock.Click image for larger version.

Hiking back west I came to a fantastic overlook that was truly awesome with the canyon floor over 1000 feet straight down. My dog, Wolf was much more comfortable walking to the edge than I was.

As I headed back down thoroughly enjoying the mid 60's, sunny day I took out the picture I had that was posted on Wenatchee Outdoors.org that was taken of a wagon heading down the Wagon Road and I realized that I could stop and take a duplicate picture of the view that they took 106 year ago. Here are the two pictures. Click image for larger version.

Hiking up the Northrup Canyon Wagon Road

Fantastic. I love hearing about places and stories that I didn't know existed. Great shots. Looks like you had the whole place to yourself

Very cool to have the modern photo along with the historical photo from the Wagon Road. Canyon is well worth visiting in October as well when the aspens near the start of the hike have turned gold.

Haven't been there since 2008 when I went up to Northrup Lake. Walking the old wagon road looks really neat. Saved your pictures from 1911 and today - thank you for sharing!

An afternote... On the way home I found a tick on my leg so I knew there would be several on my dog and his thick fur. So far I have found and killed 10. The trails near the top run through some very tall grass and I knew the ticks were there waiting. I found almost all of them under his foreleg armpit. (Does a dog have armpits???)
